A night gaming with some of your friends is always fun. You get some beers, order some pizza and huddle around your brand-new HD TV. An evening full of computer-generated gore and sports usually ensues. So the next step up from this routine is to organise a full-scale LAN (Local Area Network) party.

For those of you that still haven’t heard of LAN parties, first of all, shame on you in this day and age. Secondly, I will briefly describe a LAN party layout for you people. Basically, a LAN party consists of a room full of computers linked together in a network. Add a load of game-enthusiasts (geeks) and you’re done. Setting up the network is relatively easy, although it should still be left to someone with at least an inkling of networking knowledge.

LAN parties are for those people that just aren’t satisfied playing against 2-4 friends, obviously you could just go online but that would be anti-social wouldn’t it (note the ironic sarcasm). LAN parties can come in a variety of group sizes. A network with as little as 3 people or as many as 10,000 people isn’t unusual.

Now that we have the LAN party information bit out of the way, we can continue on to the primary purpose of this article. A friend of mine put forward a concept to me recently, asking why businesses don’t cash in on the growing trend of game-lovers. The companies that could potentially make extra cash are those that offer meeting room or office space rental. These companies tend to only hire out the space during the week, Monday to Friday. The weekend usually results in the buildings being closed and unused. This is a prime timeslot for gamers, who don’t have work the following morning. If a company were to rent out office or even warehouse space over the weekend, they could charge as a preset fee or entry toll and make more money.

Tell us what you think of this idea, whether you like or not, we want to hear.
